VOLUNTEER DURING MASS

Music Ministry & Choirs

Welcome!

Leading the assembly in raising its heart to God through song, a variety of groups provide extraordinary music for all liturgical celebrations during the Church Year.  In response to God’s call, the music ministry uses music to serve God by encouraging the congregation, supporting the homily, and praising and worshipping God through song. The music ministry is comprised of talented singers and instrumentalists.

Singers attend weekly practices in the church for Sunday Masses and special rehearsals during Advent and Lent to prepare special selections for the combined choir presentations. New singers are always welcome!

Experienced instrumentalists who are interested in being involved in the music ministry are invited to contact Nikole Giraldi (nikoleg@stfrncis.org).

speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.”

How music connects to the Mass

Music is a guiding force in our lives. Many of our most important memories are surrounded in the music that was played at the time. The Liturgy is the same. Each week, we are privileged to come together to share in Christ’s paschal mystery celebrated through the Eucharist. Music is such an integral part of this celebration that the American Bishops released Sing to the Lord: Music in a Divine Worship to aid in our understanding of music in the Liturgy. But, do you ever wonder why we sing certain songs or why a particular psalm is selected?

Music is selected and prepared based on a variety of elements, including the Lectionary, the Church season, pastoral sensitivity, and the repertoire of the community. The Catholic Church has a Lectionary that is divided into three different years and sets out the readings and psalms for each day of the year. According to the General Instruction on the Lectionary, “Throughout the liturgical year, but above all during the seasons of Easter, Lent, and Advent, the choice and sequence of readings are aimed at giving Christ’s faithful an ever-deepening perception of the faith they profess and of the history of salvation.” What makes this so amazing is that no matter where you travel in the world, the readings and psalm selections are the same!

In preparing the music for the Liturgy, the readings and psalm are read and contemplated to consider the best ways to help the congregation acclaim their faith through music. There are many different preparation and planning resources which assist music ministers by providing musical suggestions for the Liturgy. Choices are made and finalized based not only on how to help the congregation fully realize the message of the gospel, but on the familiarity of the congregation with the music. Sometimes this means a seasonal psalm may be selected in lieu of the psalm for the day because the congregation may not be familiar with it, the musical setting does not enhance the connection to the Liturgy, or it is not available in our music resources.

Ultimately, the music is selected and prepared to bring us all together in worship, and yes, we want you to sing! The Bible says to sing is to pray twice and so each week, you are an integral part of the preparation for the Liturgy.
